Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon (KCMV), a community service organization and chapter of Kiwanis International, is cancelling 2020 Tulip Festival Salmon Barbeque on April 4-26, 2020 at Hillcrest Lodge, Mount Vernon, due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak.
The event has been held in the community for 67 years, to raise funds for local youth and charitable work. The Kiwanis Club Salmon Barbeque is an official Skagit Tulip Festival Event. Each April the Festival attracts visitors from around the world, as well as many local patrons. Last year approximately 13,000 came to Hillcrest Lodge to eat during the event.
“We are saddened to cancel the event this year. The Board determined that the health and safety of our community must come first. Many patrons and volunteers are in the most susceptible age group for COVID-19.” Jarrod Ball, BBQ Committee Chairperson declared. “The Seattle area impacts have included sharp drops in public patronage of food service establishments. The Kiwanis Club also has an obligation to manage financial exposure to the probability of restrictions on events imposed in the coming weeks.”
KCMV is planning an alternative fundraiser to take place later in the year. Details will be announced at a later date to support the Club’s mission of serving the children of the world
Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon has been serving the community since 1924. The Salmon Barbeque is the Club’s primary fundraiser. The net proceeds provide scholarships to local youth, support Boys and Girls Club, Friendship House, Mount Vernon Parks and other organizations. In 2019, KCMV donated $81,000.
Contributions to support KCMV’s service mission can be made directly. Please contact Club President Tammy Belisle at Heritage Bank 360-503-1107
